Pongal is the most anticipated and probably the most significant festival in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and a few parts of Sri Lanka where the Tamilian community is present. Pongal is all about cherishing and thanking the sun god, mother earth and the cattle that have made farming and cultivating crops easy for mankind. Pongal is a very old traditional festival which can be dated back to the Sangam Age (200 B.C. to 300 A.D.) and the most popular story goes as such; Lord Shiva asked his bull, Basava, to tell the mortals to take an oil massage and bathe daily while eating only once in a month, to which the bull told the humans to eat daily and bathe once in a month. Enraged, Lord Shiva banished Basava to earth and told him to plow the fields and help the humans grow more food. Pongal is celebrated through 4 days of the week in the month of Shravan and each day has a significance of its own.
